Approaches to Learning Skills - Student Perceptions
Eric Usher - MYP Coordinator

HS students recently took time during Thursday Advisory to share their perspectives about the development of ATL skills across their SIS experience.

HS students recently took time during Thursday Advisory to share their perspectives about the development of ATL skills across their SIS experience.

ATL posterThat honest feedback pointed to some valuable conclusions:

  • Students begin to develop important COLLABORATION skills in elementary school.
  • Students would like to see TIME MANAGEMENT and THINKING skills taught more often and explicitly.
  • COMMUNICATION and INFORMATION LITERACY are the skills that students recall being exposed to most often.
  • Students acknowledged learning ATL skills not only at school, but also at home and through outside activities.
  • Students identified the important role that ATL skills play in developing global mindedness and intercultural competence.

Thanks to all students who contributed to the ATL conversation. Your input will help teachers as we continue to look at ATL skills as well – identifying the classes and learning activities where each skill arises and which skills we might need to teach more explicitly.

Do you have further thoughts about ATL skills? Keep the conversation going: eusher@seisen.com

Thanks! –Mr. Usher

As part of their exit from the CAS program, every senior recently sat with their Advisor and the CAS Coordinator for an informal 15-minute chat known as the final interview. Most students were ready to be done with CAS, relieved that they had passed another milestone in their school journey (not just done with CAS, they are also done with the Core!), but still reminisced on the highlights and lowlights of the journey.
