The Grade 10 Visual Arts students have been putting the finishing touches on their final artworks for the first Unit which investigates Surrealism as the key Art movement, whereby students explored a range of different Surrealist inspired techniques and processes, and were encouraged to experiment creatively in the pursuit of an idea or thread they could tease out for the summative piece.

At this stage of the MYP, I am encouraging the students to develop their autonomy and independence as Art makers, and explore media of their choice as well as thinking about their own visual language. For those who will go on to the highly student centered IBDP Visual Arts course, these are key competencies, and are integral to the criteria of the revised DP course.

Final Artworks will be featured in the December newsletter, so stay tuned!

In Grade 8, the students are also putting their final touches on their Reduction Cut prints, which have developed through investigating the ideas of a key Post Modernist Art movement, Pop Art.

The students have significantly improved their Investigation and analysis skills in this unit, as well as being exposed to a new art making technique, which broadens their art making tool kit and offers them new possibilities as they make Art.

Developing a breadth of skills is one of the key objectives of the Art department to ensure that the students are properly prepared for the rigors of the DP Art course, should they choose to pursue that in Grade 11 and 12.
