PYP Coffee Morning: Approaches to Learning

A PYP Coffee Morning to demonstrate how we are unpacking the Approaches to Learning (ATLs) in the Enhanced PYP. 

This morning we invited parents to join us and unpack the PYP Approaches to Learning (ATL).

With the implementation of the Enhanced PYP, there is an increased focus on these approaches to learning, formerly known as the transdisciplinary skills.  There are five major categories of ATL:

We started the session by likening these skills to tools students may collect and learn to use during their school journey.  We then challenged parents to work in teams to create the tallest marshmallow tower they could using only the provided materials. Parents reflected on the skills/tools needed to complete this task. 



The idea of the ATLs is that students learn, practice and master the skills so they know which skills to use and when. In order to do this, we must provide opportunities in the curriculum for the students to learn and practice these skills. This can be done by first explicitly teaching and modeling the skills, and then gradually providing less scaffolding as students become more competent with the use and application of skills.  The slideshow, below shows how skills can be explicitly and implicitly built into the curriculum and how students can self-monitor and track the progress of these approaches to learning.
