An Inquiry Approach to Teaching and Learning in Mathematics
Our teachers are lifelong learners! Read how they spent their weekend inquiring into effective teaching and learning strategies in mathematics.
Last weekend many of our teachers gave up their weekend to engage in an EARCOS (East Asian Regional Council of Schools) mathematics workshop hosted at Seisen.
This workshop engaged teachers in what research reveals about effective teaching and learning of mathematics and how this connects to inquiry. Together, they explored mathematics concepts through engagement with a range of tasks, articles and online resources. The role of high challenge tasks, digital provocations, mindsets, organization of curriculum and classroom culture in creating learning environments.
For more information on the role of mindsets in mathematics, please see our blog post from October entitled 'Developing a Growth Mindset in Mathematics'.
Our host for the Workshop was Mignon Weckert, who flew in from Australia to share her expertise with teachers attending from schools in Japan, Korea, Philippines, China and Thailand. Mignon has held various leadership roles in schools. She has been involved with the International Baccalaureate since 2000 as a teacher, PYP coordinator, workshop leader and school visitor, regional manager for the Asia Pacific region based in Singapore for 6 years and head of elementary for a large international school.
Last Friday we held two information sessions for parents: A PYP coffee morning on building resilience and a PYP Exhibition family information evening.
