Social and Emotional Support
The School Counselors strive to develop the whole student on her journey through Seisen. Three counselors assist Seisen students: one counselor for Kindergarten and Elementary, one for the Middle School and another for the High School. Our goal is to help students focus on academic, personal/social, and school/community development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society. Working together as a team with the School Nurse and the Learning Support Specialist, the counselors provide caring concern and practical support so that students can grow and thrive.
In addition to one-on-one and small group help the counselors teach whole class lessons as part of the curriculum.

Qualifications
Teachers, specialists, or parents can refer students to Learning Support. On a rare occasion, a student refers herself. The Learning Support Specialist identifies the learning difficulties of the referred students by:
- obtaining information from the parents and teachers
- reviewing previous educational history
- documenting observations in the classroom
- consulting the Seisen Support Team (SST) members to discuss the student from different perspectives with a multi-disciplinary approach
- developing an action plan, as needed, and evaluating the student’s response.
The The SST may recommend an outside evaluation when it suspects that the student may have needs that cannot by assessed and/or supported with the resources available at Seisen International School.
Services
In Kindergarten and the Elementary School, students receive push-in and/or pull-out services. In Middle/High School, pull-out services are available.
There are also indirect services where the Learning Support Specialist communicates with the teachers and specialists to discuss ways to differentiate and support the individual students.
In keeping with the PYP and IB Diploma Programmes, the Learning Support Specialist, whenever possible, uses the materials and approaches related to the programmes of inquiry as a vehicle to support the students.
Examples of services provided to the students (based on the objectives of the individual plans) are:
- reading, writing, spelling remediation
- basic math skills practice
- curriculum-based support
- coaching on study skills, including time management and test preparation.
The Learning Support Specialist assesses each student periodically and exchanges information with the teachers, specialists, and parents. Both quantitative and qualitative assessment data are used to evaluate and update the student’s goals.
Middle/High School students who receive learning support qualify for testing accommodations on mid-term and final exams.

Language
Language Support
Seisen International School is committed to providing targeted language support for our Multilingual learners in their English language acquisition and development to enable them to access and succeed in their learning.
Support is offered through push-in sessions in homeroom classes and small group classes during the language periods by Language Support specialists. Our Language Support specialists collaborate with homeroom teachers to differentiate instructions and meet the language learning needs of our students.
The WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design Assessment) framework offers a comprehensive approach to supporting learning, teaching, and assessment of multilingual learners.
Health Services
Two full-time registered nurses oversee the School Health Programme. They provide health services, health education, and counseling to students during school hours. This programme is geared towards promoting a high level of student wellness that meets educational and health requirements.
Frequently performed activities include:
- giving first aid
- managing the illnesses of students and school staff
- controlling communicable diseases
- evaluating severe trauma and medical emergencies
- administering medication during the school hours
- providing nursing procedures and necessary care for students with special health needs
- assisting in crisis and high risk situations such as child abuse, suicide attempts or threats, and substance abuse.
Health Objectives
- To reduce the incidence of students’ morbidity and absenteeism related to accidents and illnesses.
- To provide health assessment and physical exam of students to promote early referral of health problems.
- To assist with the identification, placement, and management of students with special health needs.
- To serve as liaison among school, home, community, health ministry, and other health care agencies.
- To provide staff development and other information support for department personnel, faculty, and non teaching staff.
- To serve as a resource to the administration on environmental, health, and safety issues.
- To conduct health services in a cost-effective manner, with appropriate quality control and accountability.
- To decrease the incidence of student absenteeism due to communicable diseases.
Health Services
- Evaluating student illness and injury. The school nurse determines which student can return to class, which should go home, and which requires medical referral.
- Administering emergency care and first aid to students and staff: The nurse is skilled in emergency care and first aid techniques and is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Providing an effective communicable disease program, including immunization surveillance and protective measures; identifying early signs and symptoms of communicable diseases. Notifying school administration, staff, parents, students and local authorities, when appropriate.
- Administering physician- and dentist prescribed medications, over the counter medications and special procedures in school when required by prescribed instructions sent by a parent.
- Identifying health problems that may interfere with learning: Students in selected grades receive a health appraisal annually (routine health check of vision and hearing for grades 2,3,6,8, 9 height and weight for grade 1 - 12).
- Assessing the unique health needs of handicapped students and providing specialized medical procedures where required.
- Adjusting school environment to accommodate students with health problems (e.g., diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, etc.) which may cause absenteeism.
- Teaching first aid and arranging cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for faculty and non-teaching staff.
- Maintaining the student and faculty staff health records.
- Providing referral and follow-ups to ensure parents have been notified of the identified problems and informing them how they can obtain needed services for their children.
- Providing adequate facilities, emergency medical equipment and supplies throughout the school year.
- Providing temporary resting place for students and staff in case of sickness or stressful events while at school.

Virtually all graduates of Seisen International School are accepted by, and enrol in, college or university.
The purpose of our advising programme is to guide and assist with all aspects of the college search and application process.
We work with students to find universities that match their personalities, needs, and goals while offering advice on establishing manageable timelines.
Additionally, we provide pertinent information regarding standardized tests, test preparation, and summer programmes. We actively encourage college representatives to visit our students and our school.
