Grade 2 and 4 Coding Showcase

Sean Carroll

On Monday, December 8, students in grades 2 and 4 hosted a special Coding Showcase. Families were invited on to campus to play and learn about games created by students during their coding unit.

In the weeks leading up to the showcase, students developed their computational thinking skills by breaking big problems into smaller parts, creating step-by-step coding instructions, testing their ideas, evaluating their effectiveness and trouble-shooting any problems. In addition, students used their creativity in designing characters and backgrounds for their games.

Grade 2 students made a soccer game using the ScratchJr app. Students explored a variety of Triggering codes so that the player could control the action and the characters could communicate with each other. Student games consisted of 4 scenes that all interacted with each other. You can see all the possible codes that students used below.

Grade 4 students created a jumping game using the more advanced Scratch platform. As you can see from the image below, there are significantly more codes for students to apply in order to create their games. In order to create the movement of each character, students had to develop an understanding of a coordinate system. Students had to plot exactly where on the X and Y Axis they wanted characters to move.

Thank you to all the families that were able to join us. I’m sure students were happy and proud to show off all the knowledge and skills they have been developing this semester.
