Examples of Student Initiated Action

Hello! We are the exhibition group in 5A called Nami. Our topic for exhibition is the ocean. We are making a donation for oceans and sea animals . On April 22nd, we will have a sale of bracelets, rings, earrings, hair bands, hair ties,  pencil grips, pins and pouches. The items we are selling will be from 100  to 500 yen. We will send the money to an organisation website called Team Seas. Team Seas is an organisation  that helps clean the ocean with volunteers and a robot. It will really help if you also bring reusable water bottles instead of plastic pet bottles. - Jun, Hina, Hitomi & Neha

Students presented their action to each of the classes invited to the sale.

One Grade 2 student heard about the Sale, and also decided to contribute items towards this cause:

The Sale:

Taelin, Cocomi & Lisa have been researching the characteristics of traditional Japanese arts and crafts, how these have changed over time, and future advances in art.

As part of the action component of Exhibition, they learnt how to make their own washi paper:

Then designed and created their own washi lamp in the Middle School/High School design room:

They presented to Grade 4 on the history and importance of washi paper in Japan and taught them how to make their own washi paper & frame:

Elena, Jamie & Vivia have been inquiring into how the fashion + cosmetics industries have changed over time, the environmental impact of fashion, food, and cosmetic waste and ways we can take action towards waste.

Before stepping into a classroom to present or lead an activity, students rehearse first in front of their peers to receive feedback on how they might improve their lesson:

Elena, Jamie & Vivia led a workshop for Grade 4 students on how they could upcycle by making a tote bag from an old t-shirt.

Grade 4 students were thrilled with their new bags and were seen proudly using them between classes and expressed they were eager to go home and make more for their families!

Akane & Marie have been inquiring into sustainable practices in Japan from the past and how sustainable practices reduce climate change. On Earth Day they organised a repair and repurpose station.

After presenting their research, they collected items from Grade 1 & Grade 2 students and parents to repair on Earth Day:

Congratulations Mia, Hiiro & Kokoro who raised a total of 29,973 yen for Second Harvest through their bake sale and also donations from the community. They raised awareness by taking action on their learning and connected with an organization to support the homeless.

They began their journey by firstly conducting an interview with Second Harvest to learn more about the charity:

They presented research and the purpose of their sale to students in Grade 4 & Grade 5:

They prepared items for the Bake Sale:

And raised an incredible 29,973 yen for Second Harvest!

"We are Chaelynn, Haru, and Momoka, and we are here to tell you about the war in Ukraine and Russia. This war happened on Febuary 24, 2022, we got interested in this topic because we wanted to tell people about the war, about the people who are getting affected by it, and what we can do to help. Many young children from your age to elders have been affected by the war going on. Many men without any military knowledge have been fighting in the war for around a month.  We wanted to deliver the message that even though we are far away from Ukraine, we can help and support those who are affected by the war. We are  collecting an art piece from every Elementary student and we will make it into a book, and upload it at the SIS home website. We are also planning on sending this book to the Ukrainian embassy. We are making this book to show that  there is still hope for peace in Ukraine and Russia. The subject/ art is going to need positive drawing and writings for Ukraine. We want to deliver the message that even though many people get hurt, we should always have hope and never give up. Even though we are very far away from the conflict, we want to show support to the Ukrainians who sees your artwork." - Chaelyyn, Haru & Momoka

Ena, Miina and Kagura have been researching on the topic of ballet. They have learnt about common injuries, inequality in ballet and waste in the ballet industry.

"We want to spread the message how ballet is beautiful and to motivate others. Next week, we will be doing a ballet performance for all of Kindergarten. We will perform and then teach the students some ballet moves. We wanted to do this so the students can have fun and get interested in ballet. We would like to ask you to bring a donation of 300 yen or more to the performance. 100% of the money will go to a charity called “Dancing for the children”. (http://www.dancingforthechildren.com/) Mara Galeazzi, the principal dancer with The Royal Ballet in London, created Dancing For The Children to raise and distribute funds to help children around the World. The money helps children afford ballet classes, pay competition fees and buy equipment they may need, also the money supports teaching dancing to children whose mental or physical health is a problem. We will also be organizing a second hand dance clothing sale. You can bring any gently used ballet materials to school also. We will collect these and make a sale to raise money for this charity too. The performance is on Tuesday 26th April during the school day. Please bring your donation of 300 yen or more with you on Tuesday. We can’t wait to dance for you!
