Playing Shop in Japanese Class - Making Connections Across PYP Subjects
  • Grade 2

The Grade 2 classrooms were a buzz this week as the students connected learning across the subjects.

Students in Japanese class have been connecting their learning to the current unit of inquiry on Entrepreneurship by investigating:

  • Reasons people construct a business

  • Ways businesses operate

  • Ways to effectively advertise

  • How advertising influences consumers

Students developed their communication skills through:

- learning how to communicate with shop staff when they go shopping

- how to say a variety of shops in Japanese

- how to count money in Japanese

- what do you say when you buy something in Japanese

- describing items, asking for the price, and persuade others during the experience of “playing shop”

Students chose the type of shop and product they were going to sell. They had a wallet with money to practice counting and engaging in conversation with each other. Students created posters to advertise their products and make their shop look attractive to the buyer.

Many teachers joined in for this learning experience also!
