Parenting in a Digital Age Virtual Workshop 2021

Parenting in a Digital Age Virtual Workshop 2021
Serrin Smyth

This week we hosted an important parent workshop focusing on 'Parenting in a Digital Age' via Zoom, facilitated by our ICT integration coach, Grant Haggarty & our Kindergarten & Elementary Counselor, Veronica Gomes.

The focus of these workshops included:
- how to develop digital technology agreements for the home environment
- revisiting our digital technology agreement at Seisen
- technology and its impact on social, emotional and communication skills
- how parents can monitor their children's devices, setting up permissions and restrictions to support safety and well-being online
- examples of online scenarios that the school should be made aware of
- understanding the restrictions of social media (Grade 3 - 5)

In breakout rooms, parents discussed how they might respond to different scenarios and shared the types of strategies they are already using to support them.

Some thoughts from parents included:

"I give my daughter time to wrap up things and time to tell their friends good-bye etc. instead of immediately taking it away. It's so simple, but it's quite similar to pulling little kids away from playing in the park. It still works for my daughter, but I wonder if it will still work when she is older."

"I would like to try getting off our devices as a whole family together, for the hour before our daughter’s bedtime."

"It is good to make an agreement, and set time for using all the phones and devices, not only for my daughter, but also for myself. Screen time setting instructed by Mr. Grant is quite useful to us, and the importance to manage devices to our child and ourselves instructed by Ms. Veronica also quite educated me."

Below you will find the slides for the workshop, which include videos, links and further readings to support you at home.

Should you have any more questions or concerns you would like to discuss, even if it's to set up a time so Mr G can step you through how to set up some of the monitoring and protecting tools on your devices, please be in touch!
