Recently, Grade 4 completed a How the World Works unit entitled Natural Systems. The unit is an inquiry into earth’s natural systems.
The unit’s third line of inquiry connects to the concept of responsibility: How communities prepare and respond to natural disasters.
This morning, representatives from the Life Safety Learning Center came to Seisen with earthquake and smoke evacuation simulations that really solidified the importance of our central idea: The earth’s natural systems create both gradual and rapid changes which can impact people’s lives and the earth.
In the afternoon, Life Safety Learning Center personnel also conducted a lesson about the use of fire extinguishers.
Afterwards, the children had a lot to say about these experiences. We really appreciate the Life Safety Learning Center for helping our students prepare for natural disasters. With a deeper understanding of what people go through during a natural disaster, the children are better positioned to assist people in crisis.
