On Friday, September 11th, the elementary school hosted the first Primary Years Program Coffee Morning of the school year. The topic of the Coffee Morning, “Human Growth in the Tween Years”, connects to units in grades 4 and 5. Dr. Erin Valentine, the Kindergarten and Elementary School Counselor, was the main facilitator of the Coffee Morning.

Both grades start the year with Who We Are (WWA) units of inquiry. The WWA unit in grade 4 is called Growth, and the WWA unit in grade 5 is called Evolving Identity.
Specialist teachers integrate lessons into many units of inquiry, and Dr. Valentine, as the counselor, shared information during the Coffee Morning about the lessons that she will teach, because both units include content about puberty.

During the Coffee Morning, parents and guardians learned about the content of upcoming puberty lessons and the approach taken to build a caring and open environment during those lessons. It is very important that the students are comfortable enough to ask any question.
“Human Growth in the Tween Years” is part of the PSPE (Personal, Social and Physical Education) curriculum, which students study from kindergarten.

The Slides used in the Coffee Morning are available in the Parent Portal. But the Slides only tell part of the story, because parents and guardians have a chance to talk, ask questions, and share experiences with each other. When your child is in grade 4 or grade 5, I strongly recommend that you attend this Coffee Morning. The conversation is invaluable!
