Each August Seisen Faculty and Staff take part in an Orientation Week before students arrive. This is an important time for staff to plan for providing a safe environment with a focus on the multi-faceted nature of community wellbeing.

One focus of orientation this year was on unpacking our "Definition and Principles of Learning. Our "Definition of Learning" and "Learning Principles" are an important piece of our Guiding Statements (newly designed).

The goals of the staff sessions were to:

  1. Create a shared understanding of what learning looks like at Seisen
  2. Discuss ways to better support learning
  3. Find strategies to implement learning principles within class and across the community

Definition of Learning

We believe that learning is a life-long process in which each learner engages with and reflects upon information and experiences in order to develop skills, conceptual understandings, and attitudes.

Learning Principles

  • Learning is enhanced when it takes place in an environment that supports wellbeing.
  • Learning is enhanced within an inquiry cycle that fosters a love and ownership of learning.
  • Learning is enhanced when approached with a growth mindset.
  • Learning is enhanced when we use technology responsibly.
  • Learning is enhanced through partnerships between students, parents, and teachers.
  • Learning is enhanced when we collaborate.
  • Learning is enhanced when assessment informs and guides teaching and learning.
  • Learning is enhanced when learners exercise voice, choice and action.

Through our learning we are becoming active, competent, and compassionate players in our global society.

You can see the faculty and staff demonstrating these principles in this video from Orientation Week 2021.
