*This "Poverty in Japan" series of articles is based on a presentation given by the Seisen High School Social Justice Committee to their peers at an assembly in November 2021.

We are Juwon and Ashita, and we are the co-leaders of the Social Justice Committee for 2021!

Our committee presented about gender inequality last year. This year, for the past 2 months or so, we’ve  been working on a new project on "Poverty in Japan". It may be easy to forget but poverty is a global issue, that is also prominent locally. Recently, for instance in Japan, with increased poverty rates due to the pandemic and with the Tokyo Olympics, more attention has been brought to the issue of hidden poverty in Japan.

We approached this project by focusing on four sub-areas:

  1. Food Sustainability
  2. Fashion Sustainability
  3. Immigration
  4. Education

Through discussing this topic from multiple lenses, we hope that everyone can learn and think about the different ways in which poverty can be addressed. While reading these articles, we also encourage you to think about how immediate some of the examples are and how we can take action towards this issue.

On behalf of the committee, a few members from each of the groups will present their research.  We will start off with the sustainability group and share a new article each day.

Thank you to the presenters, all our other members who worked very hard for this, and everyone who listened to our original presentation. We hope you will be able to gain more insight on poverty in Japan from different perspectives.

We hope you that are able to see yourselves that poverty is an issue that is in a way very proximate to our daily lives and familiar situations.
Thank you!
