This month for the student spotlight, we feature Class of 2024 Graduate, Kitty Li, who is currently pursuing a career in the Visual Arts with an Animation focus, at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, LA.
Growing up, I was fascinated by animated shows and movies like those from Disney and Studio Ghibli; they were my primary sources of entertainment. As I matured, I became increasingly captivated by the storytelling and world-building in these works.
Hello! I’m currently a first-term student at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, LA, focusing on animation.
Visual art has always captivated me. I’ve been influenced by the immense amounts of art that exists on the internet, and particularly seeing new and young artists has always inspired me to create art that resonates with others. My family has also played a significant role in my artistic development , as many of them have pursued careers in art.
I am learning the art of animation. Growing up, I was fascinated by animated shows and movies like those from Disney and Studio Ghibli; they were my primary sources of entertainment. As I matured, I became increasingly captivated by the storytelling and world-building in these works. It’s a combination of both traditional art and newer ideas. I realized I didn’t want to pursue a full career in fine arts but instead wanted to explore digital mediums. Animation perfectly blends these elements, and since starting at university, I’ve truly enjoyed my classes and instructors.
Studying at ArtCenter feels distinct from typical art schools. While it may lack the colorful and whimsical atmosphere of places like RISD or Pratt, it places a strong emphasis on industry readiness. My studio classes are usually five hours long, which may seem daunting, but because I’m genuinely engaged in what I’m doing, the time flies by. My 2D animation professor, Michael Show, has a rich background in the industry, having worked on films like The Little Mermaid and Hercules, as do many of my other instructors.
Being here means I’m surrounded by peers who I may collaborate with in the future. Also, There are numerous opportunities to participate in events and network, such as the Lightbox Expo, which is fantastic for connecting with established professionals in the field.
When I graduate I aspire to become a storyboard or concept artist for major companies such as Disney and Pixar and have my name on the credits of the films. However, I do want to eventually focus more on my own creative projects and share it with the world.
For aspiring art students who want to pursue it in the future:
I suggest learning more about yourself and the art you want to create, that is unique to you and also something that will set you apart from others. Although some universities may have prestigious reputations, they might not be the best fit for you, so take the time to research and follow whatever feels right.
Also feel free to ask me any questions!
