What are your fondest memories of Seisen International School?

Peris Wanbugu Seisen Graduate

My experiences with the IB program bring up so many fond memories of Seisen. From the classroom discussions in my Literature classes that always encouraged me to speak my mind, think independently and critically, to the fun and often comedic Biology classes, to my Psychology classes where I developed an interest in the intricacies of the mind and my French classes where I realised my love for foreign languages. As rigorous and gruelling as the IB programme was for me, I carry fond memories of the experiences I had and how they greatly shaped me into the person I am. I also miss the extracurricular activities I was involved in such as the Women’s Education Support Committee where I participated in an initiative that helped girls in Bangladesh obtain a University education. I miss the fundraising activities and how impactful they were to the lives of these girls and in the long run, embodying Seisen’s long tradition of ‘putting love into action’.

How did your education at Seisen influence your career path?

One of the most transformative experiences of my life was my education at Seisen. The IB curriculum at Seisen moulded me into a critical thinker which is a quality that is necessary in my current career path in International Relations. Being in a culturally diverse school such as Seisen also allowed me to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity, ease in adapting to diverse work
environments and an ability to engage with people in this increasingly globalised world. The academic rigour of Seisen’s education program, coupled with its international diversity and extracurricular activities influenced my decision to pursue International Relations at both the Bachelor's and Master’s level. It was through Seisen that I realised I have a passion for world issues and has therefore shaped my desire and current pursuit of a career in the United Nations and other international organisations.

What life advice would you give current students?

In the past ten years (including my time in Seisen), I struggled a lot with feelings of self-doubt, and I let it come in the way of so many life-changing opportunities and experiences. I came to realise later in life that it’s called imposter syndrome. If you are anything like me and currently struggle with this, do not let imposter syndrome cripple you, dull your dreams and ambitions. Dream so big that it’s silly. Put action behind those dreams. Do it even when you’re scared. Just start! Trust yourself more and do not downplay your accomplishments…big or small. You are smarter and more capable than you realise.
