Mr. Peto is encouraging the Pre-4th graders to read and comprehend various types of articles using many types of strategies.  With a partner, the girls begin by ready the different sentences together and drawing pictures to show what is happening in that sentence or section of writing to convince each other that they understand what the author is saying.  This helps them visualize what is happening and put the different parts of the writing together.  The students have to circle the parts that they do not understand so when they come together as a group, they can ask each other and try to make sense of everything that the article consists of.  Once they come together as a group, they talk about their piece and explain everything that they took from it.  They share their ideas and thoughts during the discussion while Mr. Peto and the other students assist each other on the ideas that they don’t understand.  The purpose of the discussion is that they must enter it with some understanding and ideas of the writing, but will have an even better understanding and a broader variety of ideas after the discussion.  It allows them to share what they have learned and improve on their communication skills, while the reading aspect of the assignment helps their reading and comprehension skills.
