Pre-4th, 5th, and 6th graders enjoy summer school!

The Pre-4th, 5th, and 6th graders have enjoying their time learning at summer school. All grades have been working on vocabulary, math, reading, communication, and writing skills!

One thing the Pre-4th and 5th grade class learned today, was the difference between facts and opinions, as well as what a thesis statement is. Thesis statements are essential when writing, as it makes the basis of the writing. The students also worked on changing factual statements, into opinions. For example, the fact ‘It is summer’, can change into the opinion, ‘summer is the best!’. Many students were very confident, and participated in the class, which shows their engagement in class!

The Pre-5th grade class worked on reading comprehension today. Students were given a poem, and a set of questions which tested their ability to understand and comprehend the poem. The students worked in pairs, and improved their collaboration and communication skills, as they answered the questions together. The students enjoyed this activity, with one student stating that, “The poem is very interesting because the poem uses ‘he’ to talk about his shadow! I like reading poems because sometimes the meaning is hard to understand.”.

The Pre-6th grade class worked on math and a presentation today. Some students finished up math worksheets, while others worked on a presentation. The presentation is an individual project that the students have been working on every day, as is about a camp that they created, that they would like to go to. This presentation allows students to use their creativity as well as mathematics, as the students must include the cost to create the camp as well as the cost for each participating member. In the presentation is also a detailed schedule for each day of the camp, that allows students to also work on organization skills. One student said, “This project is really fun because it can be about any camp, and I can really be creative with it.”. Another student stated that “I’m excited to present it because I really like the camp that I created!”. The Pre-6th graders also explained why they like summer school. Some exclaimed that they liked being with their friends, and making new friends; especially because the Pre-6th class has less than 10 students. The small class also allows for more communication from their teacher, which allows them to learn and improve skills more effectively. One student said that, “I really like summer school because I’m not at home eating potato chips and on a device all day! Instead I’m learning new things, meeting new people, and having a lot of fun!”
