MS and HS Students Get Writing

MS and HS Students Get Writing

The Middle School and High School students have been working hard to improve their writing skills!

The Middle School and High School students have been working on their writing skills during this three-week summer school.

In Argumentative Writing with Ms. Allen, the 7 to 9th grade students have been working on writing strong paragraphs with good evidence to back up each point. Having evidence is essential when arguing a point, as an argument is not convincing without evidence to back it up. Ms. Allen constantly gives advice to her students, but always tells them, “Don’t erase, just add!”, and to “tell me why”, in their writing. They are also working on the structure of their writing, and finding good evidence, as well as writing flash drafts, in which students write drafts without trying to make it perfect, and go back to edit and make the paragraph better. Through this way of writing drafts, students are able to get more on the paper, which helps them improve their writing more!

In Extended Essay, students in 10 to 12th grade have been working on their extended essay with Mr. Bevan, which is a core element to the IB. The extended essay is a research paper done by students in 11th and 12th grade, and the students have been working hard on their essay, and have been learning about the different criterion, and the structure and formatting of the essay, as well as researching for their essay and working on their writing. By working on their essay in this class, the students have been both improving their writing skills, as well as getting a head start on writing this essay!

In HS and MS creative writing, students from 7th to 10th grade have been focusing their creativity into their writing. Mr Dutki has been helping students learn about the basics to stories, such as plot, characters, and how to create an interesting story, which all students have been putting into their stories. Each Friday, the students share the stories that they have written to their peers, to celebrate their hard work and improvements in writing!

In Power up Vocabulary with Mr. Lake, the 7th to 12th graders have been improving their vocabulary. Each day, the students are given words that correspond to a specific theme, and through learning the words and then using them in sentences and activities, the students are improving the word bank in their brains! Learning vocabulary is essential in becoming a good writer, and will definitely help them in their future writing.
