Middle And High School Summer Courses

All Middle and High School courses run for three weeks.

The cost is ¥50,000 per course. Students registering for three sessions will receive a reduced rate of ¥130,000.

Invoices will be sent in early April after Spring Break.
Payment deadline is April 26th.

Full Course Descriptions

Session 1 (8:30-10:00)

Session 1 Course Descriptions

Teacher Course For students entering Description
Gomez Digital Writing 7-9 The focus of the class will be to develop students’ writing techniques while using online tools to publish their work. Students will be using fun online sites to create comics, animated videos, and Interactive picture books to share their work.
Alo English as an Additional Language 7-11 The course gives students opportunities to extend and refine their literacy skills through a variety of methods, including vocabulary and grammar expansion.
Bevan Extended Essay 10-12 The Extended Essay summer course is now in its fifth year and has helped more than 40 students complete their extended essay! The purpose of the course is to help you have a near completed extended essay for when you come back to school in August. We will begin by covering how to create the ideal research question, how to complete RPPF forms which are worth 18.4% of the final grade and how to structure your EE, including the introduction, paragraphs and conclusions. Exemplars will be provided for each step of the EE so you can have confidence in knowing that what you are doing is correct. Finally, the EE grading criteria will be broken down into easy to understand parts so you can complete your EE piece by piece. Mr. Bevan will also offer you feedback and guidance throughout regardless of your EE subject matter.
Allen Historical Fiction Reading 7-9 Using the Reader's Workshop historical fiction program, students will learn that history has a lot to offer to help them to grow their understanding about the past, present, and the future. Through skills applicable to reading historical fiction texts, students will also learn that historical fiction texts are compelling stories based on real people and events. **This course will help prepare students to tackle assigned historical fiction texts throughout the academic year.
Dutki HS Creative Writing 9-10 This course will explore different genres of writing like autobiographies, poetry, short stories and journals, through both reading and writing. This course is designed with the goal of inspiring students to develop original pieces and ideas. Skills acquired will help students in their English classes.

Session 2 (10:30-12:00)

Session 2 Course Descriptions

Teacher Course For students entering Description
Allen Argument Essay Writing 7-9 In this course students will work on writing argument essays using the writing process. They will begin the course by setting goals based on their grade level before learning about the fundamental qualities of good writing to strengthen their own writing skills using the writer's workshop method. This class is beneficial for all middle school and grade 9 students who require additional help writing introductions, conclusions, counterclaims and rebuttals, in text citations, and developing the structure of a compelling argument essay.
Usher Decision Making with Data 9-11 This is a statistics course designed for students who want to be able to make better sense of statistics as they are used in society and across different disciplines. Students considering the Applications courses in the new DP Mathematics curriculum should benefit from the statistical background provided in this course. The content emphasis will be on drawing conclusions with data and examining the validity of statistical arguments.
Gomez Intro to Communication & Public Speaking 7-12 This introductory communication course is designed to give students the opportunities to gain poise, develop personal interests, and share responsibilities for group projects. Students will have opportunities to acquire listening skills, to learn fundamentals of oral presentation, to prepare and present various types of speeches, to participate in group discussions, and to develop interpersonal communications skills and poise.
Varriale Introduction to Positive Psychology 7-12 Positive Psychology studies mental health, not mental illness. Participants of this course will learn strategies to build resilience, confidence, and communication skills to help them enjoy fuller and happier lives. The course will include practice in mindfulness, journaling, gratitude, and yoga, as well as self-advocacy and conflict resolution.
Dutki MS Creative Writing 7-8 This course will explore different genres of writing like autobiographies, poetry, short stories and journals, through both reading and writing. This course is designed with the goal of inspiring students to develop original pieces and ideas. Skills acquired will help students in their English classes.
Lake Power-Up Vocabulary 7-12 In this course students will learn prefixes and root words to help them “Power-up” their vocabulary. This course includes more than 1,000 words which are arranged by theme for easy retention.
Alo Reading Strategies with Picture Books 7-10 This course will equip students with strategies to help better their understanding of texts they are reading. Exploring themes through picture books will reinforce reading and comprehension strategies, offer students a more hands on learning experience, and provide students the opportunity for literacy-rich conversations.
Bevan SAT Preparation 9-12 SAT Prep @Seisen. If you are planning or thinking about going to university in the United States of America then you should consider taking the SAT Prep @Seisen Course this summer. This course will provide: Techniques to answering many questions students may otherwise feel are beyond them, Ways to recognize the pitfalls that lie in wait for the unwary or hasty test taker Familiarity with the types of critical reading, writing and math questions on the SAT Practice tests leading to individualized instruction Simulations of the conditions and pressures of the actual test Guidance and feedback on the SAT essay.

Session 3 (1:00-3:00)

Teacher Course For students entering Description
Alo Become a Dynamic Speaker 6-8 This course will address basic techniques such as volume control, fluency, eye contact, and body language. You will also learn the skills of how to stay within a time limit while presenting informative and persuasive speeches. This course will build confidence so you can be relaxed and enjoy public speaking as an effective and confident speaker.
Bevan & Varriale Lifetime Sports 7-9 If you want to keep fit and enjoy exercising with friends this summer then sign-up for Lifetime Sports. In Lifetime Sports we will enjoy participating in sports that everyone, regardless of ability can enjoy. These will include; Soccer, Badminton, Tennis, Bowling, Golf, Swimming, Basketball, Frisbee, Hiking, Hockey, Table Tennis, Running and more!
Allen Literary Non-Fiction Reading 7-9 Using the Reader's Workshop program, students will cultivate their ability to generate central ideas that are not stated outright in nonfiction texts. They will learn how to identify and trace implicit arguments while developing necessary stamina and patience with an analytic presence of mind necessary to read longer nonfiction texts. This course will give students the confidence to tackle informational texts.
Gomez Multimedia 7-12 Students will weave together the elements of multimedia - dazzling pictures and animations, engaging sounds, compelling video clips, and raw textual information - to produce a short film.
