Celebrating Divali as part of How we Express Ourselves

Our How We Express Ourselves Unit is focusing on celebrations. We invited Gourvika's parents in because they celebrate the Indian festival of Divali which is happening now.

We learned about the features and traditions of the celebration and the reasons that people celebrate. These are the focus of our lines of inquiry.

 



Then it was time to go outside. Gourvika's mother drew a rangoli pattern outside - watch the video below. This is one way that children and women celebrate Divali. Note the little lamps (Diyas) - they are a symbol of light and they in turn symbolise wealth and happiness.

 

After that the students had a go at drawing their own rangoli patterns!
