Fine Arts

Welcome to the world of CREATIVE ARTS

Here at Seisen we offer the students a wide range of opportunities to express themselves by exploring the following disciplines: Dance, Drama, Instrumental and Choral Music, Ceramics, and Art.

At Seisen, fine arts specialists develop the students’ interests in the arts through a general program offered in grades K-10. 11th and 12th grade students, in addition to the general program, are offered selected International Baccalaureate Diploma courses to engage in sustained study and deepen their expertise.

Visual Arts

At Seisen our aim in the visual arts is to capture students’ imaginations, introduce them to the world of art, develop the skills they need to express their visions, and identify their role in the world of creativity. A general program is offered in grades 3-10 in 2-D and 3-D art.

11th and 12th grade students may elect to engage in an academic studio program as a part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma in 2-D visual art. Facilities include a sun-drenched 2-D art studio and a separate 3-D classroom that houses one of the best kilns in Tokyo.

Seisen offers a comprehensive music program in grade K-12. General music is offered in grades K-8. Middle School students may participate in Choir, Band, and Handbell ensembles. High school instrumentalists may choose among Handbell Choir, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.

Vocalists may participate in the High School Choir and audition for the Vocal Ensemble. Students interested in the serious study and performance of music may elect to take an International Baccalaureate Diploma course. Students participate in semi-annual concerts and Kanto Plain competitive festivals.

Students in grades K-3 have an opportunity to learn dance as an unique form of nonverbal, physical communication.  They are introduced to a variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, yoga and folk. Experienced dance professionals collaborate with classroom teachers to provide  students with a unique program that connects dance with classroom learning.  In grades 4-10, dance instruction is offered as part of the Physical Education program in order to expose students to increasingly

complex dance styles. Students in grades 1-6 may opt for further dance instruction as a part of the after school SASA program.

7th and 8th grade students in the Drama Activity develop their confidence through learning acting and improvisational skills. 9th and 10th grade students who select Drama as their Fine Arts elective focus on voice projection, character development, script writing, audience engagement and other elements of play production.

Actresses and theatre buffs in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to participate in three productions each year: The Fall Play is a full scale Seisen/St Mary’s co-operative event. in which the students experience all elements of producing a professional West End/Broadway style play. They have a chance to showcase their talents in acting, character analysis, set design, costume design, makeup, and publicity with all the rigor and fun of a professional production.

The One-Act Play is an opportunity for Seisen theatre aficionados to get the freedom to experiment with space, structure, and style in a series of short plays that are student directed and, frequently, student written. Students say they often develop an unexpected bond with their peers and a sense of accomplishment when they "finally put it together!"

The Musical is an opportunity for students experience the discipline  and scope of a fully integrated musical theatre production. Actors, instrumentalists, vocalists, and dancers collaborate with set, costume, makeup, lighting, and publicity crews from Seisen, St Mary’s and Sacred Heart to create a full fledged Broadway-style event!
